Cleaning Products without the Toxic Chemicals
Research shows that the toxic chemicals used in cleaning products are causing concern for the health of those using them and those who live in areas cleaned with them. Many commercial cleaning products contain dangerous and toxic chemicals.
The labels may even say “eco-friendly” or “green”. Read the label for what is really in these products.
What can you do about these toxic chemicals?
There are many things you already own that can clean your home efficiently.
Using homemade natural cleaning products is cheaper and healthier.
Needed are:
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Borax
- Hydrogen peroxide
Baking Soda
Baking soda is not just for cooking, it is a mild abrasive that can clean just about everything. You can even buy it in large boxes.
Here are some tips for using baking soda:
Refrigerator: 3 tablespoons of baking soda in ½ cup of warm water.
Wine or coffee stains: try soda water first and if it doesn’t work pour baking soda on the stain, rub it in and then brush it off.
Mold & mildew in shower curtains and stalls: make baking soda paste (use a small amount of water mixed with baking soda) to remove it, and then use an old toothbrush to rub it over the stain or to run the grout between the tiles.
Drain: pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain followed by ½ cup of vinegar. Then pour in some boiling water. This combination will break down anything that is clogging your drain and will make it smell fresher.
Baking soda can also be used as a fabric softener in your laundry.
To polish silver, instead of using toxic silver polish, fill your kitchen sink with hot water, add a sheet of aluminum foil and baking soda, and let the silver pieces soak until clean. It is an easy and fun way to clean silver.
Vinegar
Vinegar is another natural cleaner. It will clean up grease and is a deodorizer.
Here are some tips:
Soak your shower head in vinegar to remove lime scale.
Spray a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar on windows and mirrors and wipe clean with crumpled up newspaper.
Sprinkle your toilet bowl with baking soda and then pour vinegar on it. It will bubble. Use your toilet brush to brush down the sides of your toilet bowl.
Borax:
Borax is a good laundry booster and cleaner (it can even remove mold) — and is safe and non-toxic.
Hydrogen peroxide:
Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant, and is safer to use than chlorine bleach for disinfecting and whitening. Lemon juice is also a natural whitener.
Some organic cleaning agents:
There are many safe cleaning products like Ecover, Mrs. Meyers, Seventh Generation, Sun & Earth, and Orange Plus. Even though they are more expensive, they are more concentrated, and worth it because they are safe.
Making your own natural cleaning products and using natural cleaning agents, ensures that your home is safe from dangerous chemicals that are harmful to your, and your families health.
